The Great Eastern Run returns for 2026, with a fast, flat route and 5k and half marathon distances available. The traffic-free course weaves through Peterborough's city centre and past the historic cathedral, where you can be cheered on by spectators. Come to run your first race or achieve a new PB.

Route information

Terrain: Closed roads
Elevation Flat course
Take on a half marathon through the vibrant city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. The start and finish will be located at the Embankment in the city centre, and the routes are entirely along closed roads for a traffic-free race experience.
The improved route treats runners to better scenery and allows for a faster race, with the entire route based on tarmac and roads.
The route takes runners through a section of the city centre and passes through the grounds of the historic Peterborough Cathedral, one of the finest Norman Cathedrals in Europe.

There will be plenty of parking options in Peterborough town centre. Please take into consideration that there will be some road closures in place for this event.

Race Packs
Information about race packs will be communicated to participants closer to the event.
Age Requirements
  • Half Marathon: Entrants must be 17 years of age or older on race day
Cut-Off
There is a cut-off time of 3hrs 30minutes to ensure that the organiser can reopen all roads on time.
Water Stations
There will be five water station stops on the course, with cups of water available at each stop.
Headphones
In-ear headphones are strictly banned from the race as per UKA rules. Bone-conducting headphones are permitted so long as you can still hear marshal instructions clearly. Anyone spotted by BARR scrutineers wearing in ear devices will be disqualified as per UKA rules.
Pacers
There will be a team of paces that will pace you to the following finish times:
  • 1hr 30mins
  • 1hr 40mins
  • 1hr 50mins
  • 2hrs
  • 2hrs 10mins
  • 2hrs 20mins
  • 2hrs 30mins
  • 2hrs 45mins
Elite Entries
There are elite places available for the following runners:
  • Men: Who have run sub-70mins Half Marathon
  • Women: Who have run sub-80mins Half Marathon

FAQs

Are there any age requirements for the Great Eastern Run?
Yes, participants for the half marathon must be at least 17 years old. Children as young as 4 can take part in the 5k Fun Run but children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I run with headphones at the Great Eastern Run?
In-ear and over-ear headphones are not allowed. However, you may wear bone-conducting headphones instead. Any runners wearing non-bone conduction headphones/earphones will be disqualified.

Can I take part in the Great Eastern Run in a day wheelchair?
Absolutely. All wheelchair athletes will start in a separate wave in the interest of participant safety.

Run with a dog or run with a buggy at the Great Eastern Run?
Dogs, bab joggers, nordic poles and bicycles are not permitted on the course, this race is insured by UK Athletics so it must run in accordance with their rules.
