About

All Beyond Trail events start and finish in city centres, in iconic locations accessible by public transport. Designed to be completed in one day the routes take you beyond the surface and celebrate the true identity of the city.
With a mixture of urban trails there will be parks, pavements and paths to explore over a multitude of surfaces. With 25km and 55km distances there are routes for all, from challenge walkers, road runners and ultra athletes alike.
The events have strict entry capacities so you can feel part of a community, but also the environment you are running through.

Route information

Beyond Newcastle is a road and trail running event that starts and finishes in Newcastle city centre.
We welcome all runners and walkers with two distances: a 25km and a 55km ultra route.
Both of them follow fully signed routes and have feed stations along the way to keep you fuelled and hydrated.
This the perfect event if you want to try trail or ultra running for the first time. Or if you're an experienced ultra runner this could be a great training event!
Beyond Newcastle 55
Beyond Newcastle 55 is a 55km ultra-marathon starting and finishing on the West path of the Swing Bridge. The route will take competitors on a tour of the region, passing iconic landmarks such as the Tyne Bridge, Millennium Bridge, 9 arches viaduct, and following iconic footpaths including Hadrian’s Way, Wylam’s Wagon Way & Derwent Walk.
Beyond Newcastle 25
Beyond Newcastle 25 is a 25km trail run and the perfect event for half marathon runners and challenge walkers looking to embark on a new off-road challenge.
Starting and finishing on the West path of the Swing Bridge, the 25km route travels alongside the River Tyne. The route crosses the Scotswood bridge and heads back on the other side until meeting with the Derwent River. It will then reach Derwent Walk Country Park with a small loop around there and then heading back along the opposite side of the Derwent River. It then meets back with the River Tyne and follows the river to the finish point on the West path of the Swing Bridge, finishing on the Newcastle side.

Parking
There is no event parking. If you do need to travel by car there are a number of city centre and Quayside car parks close to the start.
By Car
Head for the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Post code NE1 3RG.
By Public Transport
Public transport is the easiest way to get to the start. The Quayside is a short walk from Newcastle City Centre and Gateshead Town Centre, with excellent Metro and bus links.

Age Requirements
Entrants must be 18 and over to enter the Beyond Newcastle 25 and 20 and over to enter the Beyond Newcastle 55.

Toilets
There will be toilet facilities at the start/finish, as well as close to checkpoints along the route. There will also be public toilets and portable toilets at various points.
Walkers
Walkers are more than welcome to take part, but there will be paces to maintain for each route to ensure you finish within the cut-off time:
  • Beyond Newcastle 55: average speed of approx. 12 minutes per KM (19 minutes per mile)
  • Beyond Newcastle 25: average speed of approx. 19 minutes per KM (30 minutes per mile)
